Because the league locked them out. The lockout always hurts the players more than the owners. The top paid players are fine during a lockout but the rookies, journeymen, and vets who don't get paid much are kind of fukked if a lockout goes on for too long.

Then you got the owners leveraging the public against the players.

The only time you will EVER see a players Union flat out win against a league will be when the players unions of multiple leagues and sports unite in solidarity.
We've seen it in MLB since the '94 strike breh.

That played a small part. But shelling out contracts to cats who would "improve" during the contract year was a killer. Those bums deserve as much blame as anyone.
