Multi-Syllable Rhyming:
Multies are phrases in a line of rap where more than one syllable rhymes. These phrases can be many syllables in length.
Triple Syllable Rhyming:
"...Is this the first meal I've had today?"
I ask myself, subconsciously I grab the plate,
emaciated mouth devours half away.
Small soup and bread, the crumbs: the few I left,
ran my tongue along the bowl just to scoop the rest
had-to-day, grab-the-plate, half-a-way (3 syllables)
soup-and-bread, few-I-left, scoop-the-rest (3 syllables)
Quadruple Syllable Rhyming:
So every single time you've had a thought about hell,
it's a cut in the hourglass, a notch in the belt.
Don't get stuck as the hour passes, lost in yourself;
embrace all that hour at the cost to excel.
thought-a-bout-hell, notch-in-the-belt, lost-in-your-self, cost-to-ex-cel (4 syllables)
Triple and Quintuple Syllable Rhyming:
I quietly close my eyes, duck my head and clench my teeth,
And step below the rising swing that ebbs beside my cheek.
Let redness rise beneath; the dead inside me reap the first connection!
Lesson learned: his neck resigns, it leaks.
close-my-eyes, low-the-rise (3 syllables)
head-and-clench-my-teeth, ebbs-be-side-my-cheek, red-ness-rise-be-neath, dead-in-side-me-reap, neck-re-signs-it-leaks (5 syllables)
Even Sextuple Syllable Rhyming:
“The subway, near the vents of rising smoke,
just listen for the sound of the relentless crying souls."
the-vents-of-rise-ing-smoke, re-lent-less-cry-ing-souls (6 syllables)
How Do I Get Better at Multies? (PJK from B-Boys)
The best thing you can do to get better at multies is to read the dictionary. This sounds pretty simple, but I mean literally read it once, all the way through. There are rhyming dictionaries out there as well, but I personally feel as if it takes away my own style and personality...I also feel like I'm cheating, so I have never used them. I couldn't even tell you where to find them. I have read most of the dictionary, almost the whole thing. Just skim-read it...you'll be surprised how much you retain. Vocabulary is they key, because no one wants to see you rhyme the same things over and over again.
