Ultimately, though, like Spratt noted, this mostly points to a broken work system, one where motivational YouTubers or inspirational posts are only a symptom of a much larger problem. “We’re in an economy where, in theory there’s high employment, but also a record number of people who say they feel insecure in their jobs, or how long they’ll stay in them,” Srnicek says. “Until that issue around security and safety is addressed — and that’s a systemic change that requires political momentum — you’ll always have people wanting to find ways to differentiate themselves, and other people who will make money based off the claim that they know exactly how to do that.”

I think this mindset points to a much larger problem. As a society we are so focused on productivity and rapid growth that it may very destroy our entire civilization. Sustainability is overlooked and the very thought of us having to 'slow down' growth is sacrilege. This phenomena trickles down to the individual mindset where people are so obsessed with becoming more efficient and accumulating more materials that they're literally working themselves to death. We spend our whole entire lives chasing the golden cheese and by the time we realize that its all meaningless we're in old age and close to death. This is why I say society is just one massive cult and it distracts us from developing a spiritual connection with our existence.
Little if any thought is given to questioning the true nature of reality and our existence due to all of the hyper-realities we've created to distract us from truth.

I've always felt wary about these types of motivational speakers.

Definitely heard some pretty :mjpls: comments about how people "don't want to work hard" to achieve success and wealth.

I'm not saying you shouldn't work hard and push yourself to be better (you should), but people should also understand that the system they live in is fundamentally broken. If you're poor or a minority, the system is tilted heavily against you, and "hard work" alone may not be able to overcome it. Even if someone struggles their way out of poverty, it's the exception, not the rule.

It is VERY, VERY possible that you can work hard and not be successful or wealthy.

Sh*t like this is dangerous:
eric-thomas-sleep-1.jpg

You need to sleep to be healthy. He isn't saying you shouldn't sleep too much (which is reasonable), he's advocating for not sleeping, and linking sleeping to being broke.

Dude is telling you to sacrifice your health to be successful. :gucci:

This material is insidious, and embedded in our culture, showcased through social media now, mostly, and the memoirs and how to books, which previously dominated the content outlets.

A close friend of mine, who I have since mostly stopped contact with, and many others, was esp taken with this, and lived and lives by it at times. Not sleeping, eating right, just nonstop work, even if it's not productive, it FEELS like it is, which is the whole con essentially.

Validation of social status, it's an incredible fascinating subject. And it propels the idea that America is a meritocracy.

It's crazy because it's the opposite of what you're hearing in corporate big tech where they push work/life balance.

But it's exactly as you said earlier, it sells people on the idea that they are where they are merely because they're being outworked. A view that overlooks the myriad of reasons why other people are successful. And more Importantly the fundamental reason why we work - - to enjoy life.

I was into these for a while when I switched companies. Picked them up during the job hunt and falsely considered them the reason why I was doing well.

Overthe past few years I've worked to shed a lot of those habits and focused on enjoying life more.

One of the first steps I took was to avoid coffee and other such stimulants. If I couldn't get it done on a nights sleep then it wasn't meant to be done that day :yeshrug:.

I also stopped hitting the gym 6 days a week. Gave me more time to read, catch hornets games, have dinner with friends, or just take some time for myself.

Out her jacked, but my parents talking about, you look like you need sleep. :russ:
