Rejoice, good people. It appears The Roots have finally broken ground on the follow-up to 2014’s …and then you shoot your cousin LP. Taking to Instagram, Questlove previewed some of the work being done on the new album, tentatively titled End Game, with a clip of Procussions alum Stro Elliot getting busy behind the beat machine with some very funky chops of chicken-scratch guitar. Karriem Riggins has also reported his involvement with the project (see below) though little else is known of prospective collaborators.

Questo likened the production process on the forthcoming seventeenth studio album (including collaborative albums and EPs) to that of Illadelph Halflife (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year) where they’d sample their own jams and blur that analog-digital divide. No word on when we can expect the album to drop, but it seems something’s on the way and it’ll surely be worth the wait. In the meantime, you can always catch the crew on The Tonight Show or Questlove at any of his other 30 jobs.

An Oral History Of The Roots' 'Things Fall Apart' As Told By Questlove On Its 20th Anniversary

At one point, ‘Table of Contents’ was gonna be a four parter. I made a third verse for Tariq that wound up going to The Legendary. So that was part three. I'm actually saving part four for End Game right now. Dilla did the beat for part four. I'm gonna use Dilla's music for opening the End Game album."

I want some late night sounding shyt (if that makes any sense) a la Illadelph Halflife. I don't need dark from them right now, they've held down that lane for a handful of their last albums

As much as that may be true, none of there last few efforts had that game theory slash rising down sound, maybe it was the instruments they used or features but back to back them 2 albums kept me eating good
