I need to read up on what David Chase was going for with Janice and Bobby's relationship because I still don't see nothing predatory on her end. Bobby had 2 kids, Wasn't a high earner, Didn't maximize his potential, etc. until she came along.
To me it's classic Soprano behavior.

It started with a genuine feeling. She was pegging Ralphie and saw how genuinely emotional Bobby was after his wife passed, she wanted that kind of love.

Then her "putrid rotten Soprano genes" kicked in and instead of legit connecting with him she schemed by tricking him into thinking she was making food for him. Once they were together she got bored quick and started pushing him and Tony to elevate him in the standings.

To his credit, he seemed to earn Tony's respect and eventually replaced Chrissy.

The irishman should have been made by the end of the 90s. Ancient ass dudes. Lmao

The timing is perfect. Enough time needed to pass for the events to have any meaning. It's basically Scorsese waxing about the American century.

Similar to an event Robert Caro mentioned while he was researching Lyndon Johnson.

Once, while Caro was interviewing someone, he apologetically remarked, "I hope I'm not taking up too much of your time."

To which the person replied...

"No you don't understand. Out here, nobody even knows the names of the people we're talking about. There is no one I can tell these stories to but you."

That's what the movie is about. No one remembers your grandparent's stories, no one remembers Joseph Kennedy, no one remembers the American century.

Watched this show recently for the first time in full, AJ might be top 3 WOAT tv character ever. Season 1 to the end, I can’t think of a single positive for his character.. I have not a single good thing to say about AJ, probably matched with Tony’s mother.

That's the whole point of the AJ character though. He represents a generation of poorly parented millennial children. He is a feckless and incompetent wastrel of a kid because his parents allowed him to be. This goes back to the first episodes of Season 1.

Many of these type of kids were your friends growing up. Many of them might belong to you or the people you know and love.

A lot of them, unless they come from families that can afford to deal with their fukk ups, are not the greatest adults. That was the commentary.

Finished season 1.

Tony Mom is such a bytch god damn

Relatedly, a big part of the show is really about David Chase's relationship with his narcissistic mother. Again, the character really represents a whole generation of terribly self-obsessed people who were way too emotionally manipulative to be anything but shytty parents.

True narcissist are actually alright with the people around them dying if they do not get what they want from them. Listen, it is what it is.

Many of them are/were our parents and grandparents.

The show actually tracks much better when you view AJ and the Mom as what we see in American society.

This has been explored ad-infinitum, most notably in the novels of guys like John Updike and Phillip Roth.

David Simon’s views on different characters and plotlines in the show

Don't ever confuse the great David Simon with David Chase. Levels.:hhh:
