Because the show had great writing, memorable characters, And involves the mob.
The violence kept the audience it did but plenty of shows have great writing and don't gain that kind of audience. Especially ones that made the artistic choices the Sopranos did.

Like I said, it involved the mob. That’s gonna keep heads tuned in. And HBO was airing Oz at the time, so the audience was feeling dark dramas.
There's a lot of these themes throughout, even watching the first season, there's a lot of subversive, barely below the radar themes about resentment of the American dream, the feeling of being left behind in a changing world, that probably really really grabbed a lot of HBO watchers. A mediation on America and American values at the turn of the century. 40 year old white men who related to Tony's struggle of marriage, legacy, family. Lots of women would connect to Carm. Distant, less than faithful husband, making decisions about her life.
The Sopranos, is probably the greatest domestic drama show ever made, in addition to being about the Mob, it was always about family.
he violence and sex just get viewers more into the kind of fantasy, but deeply cathartic watch, as a lot of them probably really connected with Tony. Also, maybe the greatest performance of all time. Funny, sad, inspiring, pathetic, he did everything.

rewatched it recently, and it pretty much ends after season 5 for me. season 6 is terrible in hindsight
even 6B, if you watch it again; it's just not that good. tony is basically fat Elvis at the end of his career, bad episodes like the gambling one. and you don't even like the character anymore, he's just a piece of shyt (not that Chase wasn't always trying to do that, but still)

There's 2 episodes I dislike (both already mentioned in this thread), which is a crazy good ratio. Even when most episodes aren't hitting 10/10's there's writing and acting and visuals in there that will make me enjoy them.

It's a great season and "the gambling one" is a seminal Sopranos episode lmao. Everything about that ep is great, especially the final scene.
Your complaints remind me of people who don't like the end of Goodfellas or a host of mob films when "the fall" starts. S6 is largely about the decline of the crew. But before even getting to that point the season is largely about Tony (and others) having a shot at redemption and blowing it. For a moment it's a like a golden path emerges for Tony.
I think Chase is right that a lot of people simply wanted to see Tony get his head blown off and when that didn't happen it retroactively colored how they viewed the season (or entire show in some cases).
On a side note what years would you say were Elvis Presley in his prime/peak?
