In a lawsuit that brings together Geraldo Rivera, a Connecticut bounty hunter and the former deputy police chief of Bloomfield, a professional wrestling czar has sued over accusations on a television show that he sexually assaulted a female referee.

Vincent K. McMahon, owner of the Stamford-based World Wrestling Federation, filed the suit Thursday in response to charges that aired in April on Rivera's now-defunct program, "Now It Can Be Told." McMahon and his wife, Linda McMahon, also claim that he was the victim of a scheme to extort $5 million in hush money.

Besides Rivera, the suit names David Shults, a former WWF wrestler who now makes his living apprehending bail jumpers in Connecticut and other states.

The suit by McMahon, filed in Superior Court in Stamford, accuses Shults of conspiring with former WWF referee Rita Chatterton, who appeared on Rivera's show in April. She was shown accusing McMahon of forcing her to perform oral sex on him and to engage in sexual intercourse. Chatterton later made similar charges while appearing as a guest on "The Geraldo Rivera Show."

The suit also describes a complicated scheme by people involved in the program, titled "Wrestling's Ring of Vice," to get McMahon to pay $5 million in order to keep the charges quiet.

Rivera is accused of being deeply involved in the alleged conspiracy: "The whole story had been orchestrated by him and his agents all along," the suit says.

Through a spokesman, Rivera denied the suit's allegations. "It's a mark of honor to be sued by the WWF," Rivera said. He vowed, "I will body slam them in court."

"We stand by the story," said Jeff Erdel, Rivera's spokesman. "We repeatedly asked Mr. McMahon to appear on the program to counter the allegations. He repeatedly refused." Shults, through his lawyer, Eileen McGann, called McMahon a "well-known bully" and said the charges are "bizarre" and "hysterical." He promised to counter-sue.

McGann said, "David looks forward to finally forcing McMahon to testify under oath about these absurd claims as well as other

serious outrageous acts which will be the subject of counterclaims."

Hartford private investigator Tony Toce, the former deputy police chief of Bloomfield, also figures in the suit, although he is not accused of knowingly being part of the conspiracy. Toce and Shults made tape recordings of Chatterton in which she made the sexual assault charges, according to the suit.

Toce, who is not named as a defendant, said, "I played a very small part in it." He said he could not comment further.

Shults and McMahon have been bitter enemies since 1985, after Shults -- known to wrestling fans as "Doctor D" -- was kicked out of the profit-making league. McMahon says that he fired Shults after the wrestler was captured on videotape punching ABC News reporter John Stossel. Stossel had suggested that professional wrestling is fake.

According to the suit, Chatterton was fired in 1986 for being an incompetent referee. She could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The suit also names Tribune Entertainment Co., which distributes Rivera's show. The company's lawyer, Charles Sennet, said he had not yet seen the suit, but added that the show was "carefully researched and carefully done."

McMahon's lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, said that the significance of the suit goes beyond issues of extortion and sexual assault. "The larger issue is the use of tabloid television programs to make stories where none exist," McDevitt said. "They have nothing to do with journalism.
