I'm torn on this one hand it makes great sense (French, Juicy J, etc. could've benefited from it and it looks like it helped Jay) on the other I like saving the date for a great project I'm lookin forward to cop.

Looking at these #newrules (stop it) Jay-Z won considering the album was offered for free to a million people and still did 500k first week (Jay's highest first week since Kingdom Come). J Cole also won by boldly pushing up his date to match Kanye's (I don't think he woulda cracked 300k first week otherwise). Meanwhile Yeezus did 300k (Lowest first week for Ye) and dropped bad due to the polarizing sound of the album.

Word of mouth also helps.

That's why the label shouldn't give an artist until the album is finished and handed in. But they need to stop with the pushbacks and killing cats momentum. Like someone like Wale who released Bad in February which is his biggest single ever. Then his album doesn't drop till June when it should have been released no later than April. An artist like Drake is a different story cuz he can make a Billboard hit in his sleep.
