I played SWTOR since beta breh. It was a promising game but fell short, they lost an insane amount of subscriptions and went F2P. It always amazes me how a developer will not listen to it's fan base and attempt to change/fix their game. I've seen it time and time again throughout my MMO experiences. The players know what is wrong with the game.

This game has no chance. It'll be 6 months to a year after release and be f2p. Shoulda been a no-brainer after the success of Guild Wars 2.

They coulda used this extra man-power on Fallout 4. Damn you, Bethesda. :to:

well the players aren't too hip to this monthly fee either. there's a lot of competition out there now. I don't play those games, but the goto example seems to be GW2. it's a lot of money to play one game. I guess we'll see how it works out for them...

GW2 is fukking garbage. Their main selling point, the breaking of the trinity actually worked completely opposite. Instead of being happy that the standard tank/healer/dps roles were gone, I actually missed it. There was nothing more I wanted to do than to just be a dedicated healer. I'd love to see how many ACTIVE accounts GW2 has compared to total purchases. My guess is there aren't many active accounts left.

Like I said, any MMO that is ACTUALLY a GOOD MMO will be able to easily maintain a subscription base. The problem with MMO's is this is a very difficult thing to do. MMO's are very very fickle. If they do it right, it will be an insanely fun game to play and you will not give any fukks about paying 15$ a month. If they have to go F2P it's only a reflection of poor management and a completely wasted game development cycle.

Also, look at EVE online. They're still subscription based and still have a solid and loyal 500k subscriptions.

EVE IS KINDA UNIQUE WHEN IT COMES TO THAT. EVE HAS A HYBRID SYSTEM. IT'S FREE TO PLAY AND SUBSCRIPTION BASED. YOU CAN PAY YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WITH IN GAME MONEY OR WITH REAL LIFE MONEY. IN ORDER FOR YOU TO BUY THE IN GAME SUBSCRIPTION SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO BUY THE SUB WITH REAL MONEY AND SELL IT TO YOU. THIS WAY CCP GETS THEIR MONEY EITHER WAY. IT WORKS OUT REAL WELL FOR EVE.

yeah, I mean, essentially, if you really actually want to play EVE, you're obviously going to pay for the sub. It would be pointless to be serious about playing and not pay the sub. The free to play part is more about enticing new players. I think EVE has been most successful at building a community. WoW had a community for a long time, until they introduced cross-server queuing for battlegrounds and PvE dungeons in an attempt to solve queue wait time problems. .which is a tribute to their ability to produce a well polished game in terms of their ability to maintain a high number of subscriptions despite not having a close knit community.

NOT REALLY. THERE IS A MINORITY OF PLAYERS THAT ACTUALLY PAY. THE ONES WHO PAY ARE THE ONES WHO DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO MAKE ENOUGH CASH IN GAME. THE SUB COSTS ABOUT 550MILLION ISK. I GENERATE ABOUT 2BIL A MONTH WHEN I DON'T EVEN LOG ON. MAKING ISK IN EVE IS EASY. LOSING ISK IS JUST AS EASY.

That's even more interesting considering they are maintaining 500k. Would you say the EVE community is a big part of what keeps it going? The relationships and interactions amongst it's players?

These are the same people who charged $2.50 for a piece of horse armor in Oblivion. It's like these people have no idea how money works.

this isn't too surprising. pretty standard mmo fare.

eso isn't some random entry into the mmo market. bethesda is a well known company with a loyal fanbase. and their games are tailor made for an mmo setting. think about how many people playing skyrim have thought how much fun it would be if it was an mmo.

this is as close to a sure thing mmo other than the next thing from blizzard and maybe the next eq.

it's not a small time company just trying to hit it big or getting their game out to as many people as possible.

milk the subs for as long as they can.. then go to the f2p model when it stops working.

if the game lives up to the hype.. the fiends will pay $15 happily.

If you just subcribe a month at a time when you kno you gonna have free time for it its not that bad

that's another thing people don't like about it though. it makes them feel obligated to 'get their moneys worth'. cats end up playing because they spent $15, rather than spending $15 because they want to play
