There is no point to life. Society depends upon the sustaining of illusion to prosper. Without that illusion, it will crumble and fall into chaos. Look at religion, it gives people hope for an afterlife and a reason to be good in their lives now. But what if the universe was this vast, unfathomable, uncaring thing? Well then there can be no real morality. That is assuming you think that the morality coming from a 'higher power' is real to begin with. It all comes from force, so it is meaningless to quibble about its source. The fact is that any civilization has to provide all manner of distraction to its people so that they are pacified. If everyone woke up and realized that there was no point to anything whatsoever, we would all eat each other.

TLDR: Civilization must be based on a lie, society stands on illusion, most people crave illusion and not the truth
