I heard and read fairly often about the tolerance of Islam, I've still yet to see what it is that they are exactly tolerant of in practice. Would Higher Learning care to help make inroads in discovering things that are "tolerated" by Islam? Perhaps even more specifically things that aren't deemed part of their religion or "culturally Muslim".This isn't a cynical thread, I'm genuinely curious.

When you think of tolerance, your thinking of the modern concept of liberal/secular tolerance which is a fairly new notion. Historically Islam was more tolerant when compared to major religions such as Christianity but less tolerant than most oriental religions.

Jews felt more safe in the Ottoman empire than in Catholic Europe . Islam permitted the people of the "book" to live peacefully in its lands beit for a small tax. The christians and Jews followed their own christian and jewish laws in these muslim lands and they enjoyed similar rights. But dont confuse this with "tolerance". Islamic kingdoms or emirates have become rich by overtaxing the non believers. There was even a push to stop conversions in many caliphates as the ruling class depended on the tax of non believers to support their opulent lifestyles. Whilst in Europe during the middle and dark ages, if you werent christian you were :sadcam: either way. Islam was considered tolerant if you belonged to an abrahamic religion. If you didnt, thats another story. :troll:
