Nas just misses my top 5, coming in at
#6 . I struggled over what to do about that fifth spot but ultimately went with the homie Alchemist since it's such a cohesive, beautiful piece of work and one of the best "producer albums" I've heard brehs. Brief run down of the other albums on there:
Reloaded: After dropping a near perfect debut album, I questioned whether Roc could avoid the sophomore slump. And while the initial snippets of the album scared the fukk outta me, the complete package is a worthy successor to Marcberg...and better imo. A couple of the beats aren't great but Roc's pen never misses. This is a "throwback" album that would have actually been very well received if it came out in the 90s, which can't be said about a lot of "throwback" stuff...
good kid MAAD City: Not much to say that hasn't been about an album as universally praised as this. I really liked Section 80 but felt it was held back from greatness due to some weak choruses and ladies tracks. This album is one of the best "mainstream" rap albums in YEARS, and worthy of all the praise and success. A lot of new nikkas are spitting right now, but I don't think many will have as good of a career as Kendrick can. He's That Dude.
Grief Pedigree: This album is hip hop, pure and simple. If you like dope rhymes and dope yet simple production, you'll rock this. Ka's voice ain't for everyone sure, but the words ring universal to an old head like myself. The way he plays with his flow, tinkers with rhyme patterns and wordplay...it's like a lesson. Some might call it boring, I call it refreshing.
R.A.P. Music: This and Life Is Good are the biggest emotional roller coasters for me. There's so much real shyt on this album brehs, it all just rings true. By the end of the album I felt drained in a way few albums have done for me recently. This is a brotha revealing his heart and BRAIN to us, I'm glad it's getting so much attention not just in our world but even from Pitchfork and other places
Russian Roulette: Already spoke on it earlier, but I'll just say Alchemist is solidifying himself as one of the greatest producers ever. Like Just Blaze, I'm not sure he'll ever fall off.
Life Is Good: I thought Nas could deliver another good album but didn't expect this. As far as I'm concerned there are a couple misfires (fukk that Swizz song...) but everything else is great shyt. Many of these songs can actually be played alongside his classics live without you feeling like you want to hear something else. Bye Baby is one of Nas' BEST songs, there I said it brehs. Then there's Nasty, which is like Nasir telling the world he ain't dead yet, and the king stay the king. That shyt came out of nowhere and lit a fire under my ass
