That "article" had a lot of hyperbole. Long story short, he's with ADA which is a part of WMG. Pretty much a industry plant but who cares 
Only interesting thing about the whole situation is how Macklemores career exposes the bias in mainstream media that was already evident when you look at Eminems career.

BUt indie distribution is shyt to get your albums on iTunes etc.
Macklemore didn't get any pop radio play until his song was top 50 on iTunes and a bunch of videos with 5-10 miilion + views and selling out shows all over.
I mean he moved 82k first week BEFORE the single was for sale, radio etc.
Someone might've helped him a bit but he's still as "indie" as any known indie artist.
His first like commercial appearance was on Ellen show, cause he had a gay rights song with million of views on youtube.
Idk if that was his plan but it definitely worked on the commercial tip.

Good read. Indie used to be something real in the 90's now it's just thrown around but the meaning has changed completely. I think certain artist fan bases will gravitate to them more if they think the artist music is organic and outside of the mainstream. The appearance of rebellion from being out of or against the system draws fans which is why they continue to use the indie label as a marketing term. As far as I'm concerned any major label help means you aren't indie. That is how we used to define the meaning. The difference then was a indie artist could pop off on the box and local radio stations would play your music. Good luck trying to get radio play now from a hot youtube video. Payola did exist but not to the point no where it is now where they dictate what's played instead of relying on the most request.
