There have been plenty of animes in my lifetime but none come close to the uniqueness and originality of the DBZ music/soundtrack thanks to Bruce Faulconer. He does such a good job of capturing the mood and tension of the scene. I'm sure there have been threads about how "cool" the music is but I just wanted to focus on how the music set the mood and made the series that much greater. He sort of had this Hans Zimmer effect by capturing the feel of the scene and amplifying it.
First off:
Piccolo's Theme - It has such a calm yet commanding melody. When you heard this it meant whatever was being said or was happening was very very important. As one of the wisest Z fighters with the help of Nail and Kami, this theme is very fitting.
I also love this song which is another one of piccolo's theme. A very Alien/Namek like feel with a calm and serene build up, and then jumps into a rough, gritty melody signifying the balance of harmony and turbulence of the Nameks.
Next:
Vegeta's SSJ Theme - The piano solo in the beginning
. When you heard this you knew Vegeta was about to come through for the team. Sounds of redemption in the beginning but it soon turns into sounds of vengeance. It's like you can feel Vegeta losing himself in the anger he's built up over decades and he's finally hit his breaking point. Very fitting for the prince of all saiyans.
Now I believe this song was first used when Vegeta first went SSJ but I think it truly shines in this scene, which is one of my favorite moments in all of DBZ where Vegeta helps distract Cell just enough to let Gohan overpower him.
Now we have:
Android 20's (Dr. Gero) Theme - This theme is pretty underrated and doesn't get much notoriety, but it has stuck with me because it's associated with one of the most brutal and graphic deaths in DBZ history in my opinion. Now there's a couple of things about this theme that I loved and disliked. I love the song and I love the scene if was used in. I just really dislike that it was used for Dr.Gero and with Yamcha's death, I would of been happier if they used it for a more stronger villain and a more important Z fighter. The theme is very dramatic, powerful and cynical and the sense of hopelessness you get when Yamcha is being choked to death and energy being sucked away with the hellish fiery background and then you hear the cracks of his ribs breaking as Android 20 impales him with his bare hands is just

Here's the actual scene.
There are many other great themes and songs from DBZ but these are just some of the ones that stuck out to me.

would they ruin this beat?

So many memorable songs in DBZ. Faulconer was the man. Gohan's Anger is one of my favorite tracks
