Because the national debt is just an investment by the government. It's not a debt to anyone.

We are a sovereign nation that controls our own currency and folks still don't know this.

Our national debt doesn't matter (technically) for anything BUT USING IT AGAINST POLITICAL OPPONENTS. There is a reason Republican's run it up freely and screech about it when they aren't in power.
