Interesting story. I have no doubt about the massive money laundering through Lebanese diaspora organized crime. That has been well known in West Africa for a while, especially with the used cars. Hezbollah is probably making mint there. It takes two to tango in money laundering though and I doubt major Western international banks don't have themselves at the trough. Maybe this was the reason for some pressure?

Interesting that the DEA is the only focus of the story. Other intelligence agencies were pushing back and the FBI only gets a brief mention? The core facts are probably true but I have a feeling something else besides the Iran deal was afoot. Were these targeted guys double agents for CIA, MI6 or Mossad? Were some of our deep cover guys going to get killed in retaliation if we snatched these people? I don't doubt the Iran deal pressure but it seems strange the intelligence sources don't 100% line up behind the DEA on this.

Maybe it is just because I don't trust the DEA. I find the comment claiming the reduction of the cocaine trafficking and violence primarily being due to the heroic efforts of the DEA to be amusing. They do thing well of themselves.

@4d 6f 6e 65 79 one of those hostages that we got back after Obama paid a kings ransom to Iran (in cash) must have some seriously valuable intel. :ohhh:

There’s gotta be a reason for the Obama admin to appease Iran beyond what we’re seeing. Iranians got sanctions dropped, nuclear power, ransom payments, and got to continue their drug laundry business.

They still have Robert Levinson who some allege was chasing after Mogilevich :whoo:

And I'm still confused how Jason Rezian got caught up in Iran.

Don't forget...Iran drops people. Straight up. They are what people think the Russians are. :pachaha:

We got a rainforest between us and most everyone else :manny:

I’ll say one thing about the governments in Brazil, they don’t deal with transgressions lightly

Actually the recent coup in Brazil orchestrated by Americans could be a low key bulkhead against this but at this point that’s unfounded conspiracy tinfoil shyt

But the push towards neoliberalism and getting Lula’s people out the paint could certainly paint that picture if I wanted to reach far enough

Most Lebanese people at least in Brazil are super Brazilian. I really don’t see hezbollah looking to that population as a source of strength in the region. If they’re Muslim in background the majority are either non practicing or converted Christians

There are a million things to worry about in South America that you don’t need to even think about it North America. Fundamentalist Islam is not one of them

If it’s like that in the rest of the region, and I honestly have no idea, it’s obvious hezbollah would be using weak governments and corruption to get a foothold on the US’ doorstep
Hezb has Christian and secular (Baathist, SSNP, leftist) allies as far as the Syrian civil war and broader conflict goes. The Venezualan VP's family is closely linked to the Baathist party for example. Support for Hezb or alliance with them doesnt necessarily correlate to religiosity.

True

I’m saying that this sentiment is not close to common or even accepted in Brazil where Arabs live

Anything is possible tho, an economic crisis like this can dredge up anything

Islam spreading in Brazils favelas ...is this another Hezbollah plot @4d 6f 6e 65 79:jbhmm:

Why should it be? I remember when right wingers in the US in the 1990s claimed Farrakhan was going to build a Black nationalist Islamist terrorist group. Islam is growing there the same reason evangelical Christianity is. The Catholic Church didn't address the concerns of the poor (the ones that did were jailed or killed by the military juntas) so people are going elsewhere for inspiration. I seriously doubt Hezbollah is reaching out to Black folks.
