Ever since the Xbox One was announced Microsoft stated that Kinect was key to its future:
“Xbox One is Kinect. They are not separate systems,” proclaimed Microsoft VP Phil Harrison just prior to launch.
“Kinect is an absolutely integral part of the Xbox One experience,” reaffirmed Xbox UK marketing director Harvey Eagle just a few months ago.
We should have known better. The Xbox One is as famous for its U-turns as games:
- It required a permanent Internet connection, then it didn’t
- You could share games digitally with friends and family, now you have to give them the disc
- You couldn’t play second hand games, now you can
- It wouldn’t ship with a headset, now it does
- Kinect was fundamental, now it isn’t
All this is in little more than six months. Why would anyone trust Microsoft with any future declarations about its console?
