This thread is a perfect example of how people can miss greatness until it’s too late. I wasn’t on here at this time but I would’ve disagreed with every post in here.

I was at Weeknd’s first NY shows in October 2012 and knew that nikka was outta here. He had the whole Bronx in the building in XO apparel. A bytch started giving head right next me when he did The Party & The Afterparty.

You got people in here saying Weeknd wasn’t gonna surpass Miguel lol. Saying he needs to be “traditional.” The traditional route would’ve left Weeknd where Miguel is right now. Music is less about who has the best voice now and more about who has the most interesting brand.

Weeknd benefitted from predicting a shift in the market before it fully arrived. Traditional R&B was dying out after Trey Songs’ peak and nikkas got tired of cotton candy ass simp music. The Weeknd came with the edge that R&B needed at the right time

10 years later, Weeknd is probably the most creative mainstream artist we have. I don’t like everything he puts out but the effort he puts into his music is undeniable.
I miss that old The Weeknd :mjcry:

That trilogy was this dark, grimy R&B that I didn't know I needed in my life at the time

Are you kidding me… his music is edgy bruno mars. Debut album flopped and he switched it up. OP was completely right. Career was going nowhere until Ariana grande saved his life

He switched up his style because so many people bit him. House of Balloons/Thursday became a blueprint for a ton of mid-2010s singers like PND. Then he switched his style for his debut and it flopped and he kept changing his style until this 80s shyt he’s doing now. The quality of his music is way higher than Bruno Mars
