These kind of talking points often get reduced to binary observations without any nuance or context which mostly morphs into subjective rants about what succes should look like compared to the other artist. I find it bothersome to explain this stuff to someone that just listens to talk and especially when it comes to music artists and their impact in a specific time period or cultural movement.

I wouldn't say those are even common sentiments, they're mainly "internet rap nerd" views that don't match majority opinion. And that type of shyt is very rampant in every genre, not just hip hop. You find it in every art medium. There are cinema nerds who will tell you with a straight face that Martin Scorsese is overrated, or Steven Spielberg isn't a good director.
I still remember when rap forums would constantly shyt on Wayne and claim that Gillie wrote all his raps while bigging up rappers like Papoose in favor of him.

I'm not even a Wayne fan like that but it felt so forced back then. Now, Wayne's treated like a supreme lyrical veteran in today's age.

And quite frankly its corny as fukk. "Dr Dre overrated, Quik is way better. Dre a bytch" "Jay is overrated, Nas killed him and can fukk Beyonce if he wanted to. Black Thought is better than Jay Z" "T.I is having child issues while Luda is performing at Falco Football games" "fukk Snoop snake RIP Eazy" shyt is weird as hell. This is weirdos way of coping with artist they dont like for whatever being successful. fukking dweebs.

Great Thread

The amount of unaccomplished rappers who have scoffed at hit makers because “anybody can do that” has always been hilarious. Picture having a guy like Freddie Gibbs in your top 20 when he’s never known the pressure of having a multi million budget and be expected to make hits and good music on an album
