Arg has a SUBSTANTIALLY worse team than Portugal this WC. At the BARE minimum CR7 has William, Pepe and Moutinho and Patricio. Not much but its something.
With this 11 Messi has literally no one...and quite possibly the WORST team of all the big countries. I could plop Iceland's midfield into this ARG side and they'd top the group

It means a player of a specific talent that doesn't possess all the abilities a complete player at his position should provide. Pirlo, the wonderful passing midfielder who can't defend, a luxury player.
Messi, the fantastic dribbler and finisher who can't pass from long, doesn't track back, doesn't hold his position, doesn't defend. A luxury player.
You'd gain more as a team from a player who can/is willing to do the things Messi can't/won't do than you'd lose from a dribbler/passer. You'd be able to play an actual midfield, and your attacking players would have clearly defined and infinitely more freedom not playing "sit around, watch what Messi does, and try to respond to it somehow".
Messi is successful in an intensely drilled system that features players coached from teenage years to be cogs in it. Argentina has struggled his entire career trying to be Barcelona so Messi can be Messi.
That's not how national teams work. You don't have time, or the roster ability to make shyt work. You have to do whatever works best for you. When Messi is gone Argentina will be able to do that again and yes, they'll be better.

Argentina is clueless in the final third, my goodness.
I can’t say for Maradona but even so there are times when that Portugal team looks clueless and very dependent on CR7.
The difference is that Argentina has top players like Arguero, Di Maria, Higuaín, Mascherano and can’t help out.
