I'm a Messi stan and I don't. His FA shat on him from the moment they made that fraud ass team selection...go back to the first page or so. EVERYONE in here said this squad was weak as fukk...there's 11 men on the pitch...

CR7 has a team the plays FOR him...
ARG has a team that shrinks in Messi's presence.

Messi needs to learn how to be a leader... empower his team...

Why are mid fielders so important? I always thought it was about the strikers....
The way the game has developed in the last 20 years, a midfield that can both help defend and help attack at a high level has defined every great team. To try and apply it to another sport somewhat....balanced play throughout the middle of the field in soccer has become as important as big men who can stretch the court, handle the ball, and pass out of the post in basketball.

With a balanced midfield, you can always have more men defending than the opposing team attack when you don't have the ball, and have more people attacking then they have defending when you have it (and still being safe against a counter-attack when you do lose it).

Of course, not many players are that well-rounded, so you really have to look at your pieces and make sure their attributes add up to a balanced set-up. Because of Messi, Argentina's leans way in the favor of attacking, so when Argentina loses the ball, there's 3-5 people attacking 2-4 people in Argentina's midfield.

You could get around this by having Messi play a non-central role...but he's not Messi in those roles. If you play him out wide he's just going to cut inside anyway (and now you don't have any defensive width, so the opposing teams defensive wide players and join the attack without fear) and if you play him up top, he sees the ball less and probably gets marked out easier against physical central defenders.

Croatia has temporarily given us new life. My world cup has been extended for at least 20 hours :blessed:

I read an article where Mikel said he's willing play play in a defensive position. Let Iwobi be the 10
Hopefully the coach makes some changes :sadcam:

33% of your teams goals is very impressive. He of course opened up opportunities for his teammates to score based on him being the center of attention. Maradona did some incredible things in that World Cup. He scored 5 goals with one of those goals being the most infamous goal of all time and one that shouldn't have counted.

2014 Messi scored 4 out of his teams 7 goals. 57% of his teams goals. Are you going to say scoring 57% of your teams goals isn't even more herculean? He and Mascherano pretty much dragged their team to final. He didn't score in the final and lead his team to victory, but if we are being honest. Maradona didn't exactly score a goal in the final either.

Maradonas 5 goals weren't just any old goals.

Goal 1 vs Italy which got them a draw. That draw stopped Argentina finishing 2nd where they would of had to play a strong France team.

Goals 2 and 3 vs (2-1) England helped them win and get then into the Semis.

Goals 4 and 5 vs (2-0) Belgium got them to the final.

There are goals and theres goals. You can score some flat track style your team is already winning comfortably and you get yourself a cheeky 2 goals for the stats. Then theres the goals you score when your team needs you most in the big games to win the game.
