French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has again sparked outrage – with a cartoon portraying a drowned 3-year-old Syrian refugee as a grown sexual harasser.
The cartoon of Aylan Kurdi is in response to the New Year’s Eve sex attacks against women in Germany by men described as having “Arab or North African appearance,” The Telegraph reported.
The translated caption in the magazine reads: “What would Aylan have grown up to be? An ass-groper in Germany.”
The tragic toddler drowned along with his mom and 5-year-old brother, Galip, after a dinghy they were traveling in capsized near the Turkish resort town of Bodrum on their way to the Greek island of Kos.
A viral photograph of Aylan’s sprawled, face-down body became an iconic emblem of Europe’s spiraling refugee crisis and sparked an outpouring of sympathy for the asylum-seekers.
The cartoon has been condemned on Twitter as “racist,” “tasteless” and “unbelievably sick.”
In September, Hebdo staffers received death threats for a front-page cartoon depicting Aylan’s body near a billboard featuring a McDonald’s kids’ menu promo, along with the caption: “Welcome to the migrants. So close to the goal.”
The terrorist attack in Paris on Jan. 7, 2015, resulted in 12 deaths at Hebdo, which later published a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed holding a sign that read, “Je suis Charlie” – “I am Charlie.”
