those instances where they would take a week off before rounds, a lot of times I didn't go back and watch and I know im not the only one.

Well the reason is to have games running closer until the cf . They wanted to string it out in case teams sweep or 5 game it
they don't want to have a week of no gamescharknicks

The biggest reason for the days off for TV only. ABC/ ESPN/ TNT run this thing.Also, some buildings are booked before the 2nd round schedules are made.
ABC/ ESPN has the West finals, and Game 1 will be on Sunday May 19th if they can help it, so they have to space the games out so 1 team wont have a long rest if they would have swept the series. The East finals are on TNT, and wont start until May 20th. Plus, with the Knicks/ Rangers and Bulls/ Blackhawks sharing arenas, dates are scarce.

Ya'll remember the Lockout?They do stretch the playoffs out too long. Even most players have said they prefer to play every other day or no more than two days off at the most. I mean it takes basically a whole two months for the NBA playoffs. That's almost half an NFL season.

I'm still a fukking work most of the time
They start at 4pm out here on the west coast. My productivity level at work is fukking zero while I box score watch and I'm lucky to be back home in time to watch the 2nd game start
