Her pivot to black folks and specifically Jermain Dupri in the late 90's gave her a big lifeline. That america's sweetheart image she had early on ran it's course and she was finna be up out of there.
That was never her tho. She's a hip hop head from NYC. They made her a straight pop star

That's why the ODB collab outta nowhere worked so well.

Rainbow wasn’t great

And Mary J blige and Janet both have discographies that go toe to toe

*clears throat*

is this mic on?

ma'am.

Rainbow has Bliss, Heartbreaker(remix and original), Crybaby, Petals, After Tonight, Can't Take That Away, Thank God I Found You and How Much.

that's 9 songs out of 14 tracks. so that leaves 5 tracks and 2 of those tracks were interludes so that leaves 3 songs. (X Girlfriend, Against All Odds cover and Did I Do That?)

i do wish Rainbow would've had the Thank God I Found You remix w/ Nas and Joe on it, instead of the original.

Mary and Janet did their thing, no doubt. but Mariah was on some PRINCE 80's shyt during her 90's run. 9 albums from 1990 to 1999.

Why do you think she was so successful?

Just hungrier?

Right place right time?

Savvy marketing?

GOD, her talent as a singer/songwriter, hard work/determination, a great team etc etc

the stars aligned perfectly for Mariah
