EH...You sure about that? There were TONS of wars/battles fought with arrows, swords and shields.
This idea of honor in battle always seemed like a way to 1. cope with killing and hurting your fellow man 2. elicit loyalty and submission from your killers.
Killing a man with a knife is seen as brutal but you can blow a whole town to hell with missiles and it becomes a clinical action you can get a medal for.
