It's true that there aren't all that many great lyricists these days and out of those there's very few who can also emcee worth a damn. Conversely IMO there's quite a few out there who can emcee well... A lot of of them ain't emceeing with too many of the hip hop principles in mind though.

Honestly though I think the social climate right now is gonna change that... For better or worse the energy in the country (and especially with how the youth are responding to the shyt going on right now) is ripe for Hip Hop culture to bounce back i.e. in a contemporary way.

I shouldn't have to LOOK for dope shyt. Being dope is supposed to be an entry level requirement for you to even make it to mainstream

One would think.

The standard is just so low now. You would get clowned heavily by other MC's back in the day if you were wack and got some buzz. If a dude wasn't worthy, he'd hear about it on records. Actual talent isn't even required anymore. If you can microwave something catchy or decent, you'll get your 15 minutes today.
