I support intersectionality because it falls in line with being-for-itself existentialism.

So I think that's a yes

Interesectionalism is c00ning by definition because it requires you to downplay anti black racism from non white people and LGBT

Intersectionality does not require you to downplay anti-black racism for non-whites people or LBGT people, but instead asks you to take the totality of one's identity to determine how to best critique and combat the oppression one or one's group is experiencing.

It came around as a result of the plight of black women and that serves as one of the easiest examples. Black women throughout history were oppressed by a system that oppressed both black and women. Even when one factor was removed, rights for blacks, they were still no better off because they were oppressed as women. By the same people. As a result it was suggested that in a fight for say jobs or more historically suffrage it's best for people being oppressed by a similar oppressor should become allies.

Was Harriet Tubman a c00n for her work with Susan B Anthony?

Was Frederick Douglas a c00n for his work with Susan B Anthony?

So I ask, please, explain how intersectionality in and of itself is c00ning?

@theworldismine13 I'll wait.

what is the definition we're working off of?

i think that's a big issue when discussing social sciences - everyone has their own view of what certain terms actually mean. it's meaningless to have the discussion if you're not operating off the same baseline assumptions.

The foundation of Intersectionality from the creator of the term (a black woman) :

While studying anti-discrimination law in law school, Crenshaw realized that law did not account for the complex identities defined by both race and gender. She studied how black women in manufacturing faced discrimination because of their gender and how black women in clerical work faced discrimination because of their race.

Crenshaw said that she realized that the U.S. Constitution deals with race and gender as two separate aspects of a person’s identity, and that this means individuals with intersectional identities received less protection under the law.

Intersectionality at it core exists to identify areas where race, gender, and class intersect to create a specific type of oppression.

It's not, as @theworldismine13 Is suggesting to undervalue any specific type of oppression an individual or group is experiencing nor does it suggest that all the experiences of the oppressed are intersectional.

It's a theory that was formed on the unique plight of black women. One way, in short, the racism black women experience can be different than that of black men because they are women and the sexism that black women experience can be different than that of white women because they are black.

My understanding of the term is similar to yours. The first time I heard the term was in relation to a study of HIV diagnosis and long term prognosis. The professor mentioned how being HIV positive and a black woman posed different (and greater) challenges than for white males.

I honestly don't get how that could be controversial.

its pretty simple

intersectionailism is an ideology that sounds good on the surface and might bamboozle weak minded people but in the end its an ideology that exploits black history for the benefit of other groups who have a history of racism against black people

that is why for example you have posters on this board that will write essays supporting illegal immigration and ignore the fact that illegal immigrants comes from countries that have a longer history of slavery, oppression and discrimination against africans than the united states

if harriet tubman and douglas were letting feminism become primary over black issues and if they were using feminism to avoid confronting white supremacy, then yeah they were c00ning

also intersectionalism is a form of surrender and a sign of intellectual and physical cowardice

its promoted by black people that want to a find a comfort zone in white society and are afraid to confront white supremacy mano a mano

its also ignorant, it ignores and downplays anti black racism from non white people

Then it seems you don't understand the term. I've given you the term and examples as presented by the person who created the term and concept and it is different than what you're saying.

so, how is recognizing that the oppression a black woman working in manufacturing deals with, the oppression she has as being black and the oppression she deals with as being a woman c00ning?

If the manufacturing job says, we don't hire women or blacks. How does making a simple adjustment to one, the company hires blacks or the company decides to hire women, affect her life in a more positive way. She's still unemployed. This is where Intersectionality comes into play. She should, if she no longer wants to be oppressed by this corporation needs to fight for them to allow women and blacks to work their or she as a black woman is still oppressed.

Take black Americans. Great, we were granted equal rights and suffrage long ago, but the plight of black oppression is very much Intersectional with that of the poverty class and that of the less educated. Intersectionality would suggest if blacks in America genuinely want to find themselves no longer oppressed then all of these varying aspects need to be addressed.

So again, how is that c00ning?
