I love 50 more than Hov but we need to be real and admit that a lot of his best work was under Interscope/Aftermath supervision, and he just couldn't make anything meaningful on his own (almost all his music after 2009).

Hov is not writing anything as wack as Animal Ambition.

50 got one hot album that is trash lyrically but idk. He might be a better song writer and hook maker tbh.

Jay raps better.

Black Album is to me where Jay really grabbed me as a songwriter as much as he grabbed me as a rapper.

That album was full of catchy tunes and hits top to bottom.

Anybody from the NY/NJ area knows how shyt was over here when Black Album dropped man.

50 is a way better song writer than Jay-Z and I say that as someone who has Jay as the GOAT.

50's pure rap skills and lyrics were just average IMO but his ability to write catchy hooks, meloides and structure songs was his superpower.

Jay has songs where it’s just as lyrical and can be considered a songwriting track. Jay just doesn’t rely on hooks and commercial appeal to attract a crowd. That’s what everyone gets mad at Jay for.

If we're strictly talking pop songwriting, its 50. He had incredible earworm songs with hooks, bridges, adlibs, raps that had a whole direction and construction that he executed perfectly. His best lyrical performance is the Power Of The Dollar album, which is more influenced by Nas but its still not beating Jay.

Jay is just better at writing clever lines and getting a whole mission statement across in a song. He had to get singers and other voices for his best hooks, but even then thats a skill that he knew where he lacked and knew how to fix it.
