They make a teleportation device. With a catch...

I..

  • Would do that

  • Would let someone else go through that so hopefully I don't have to go through that

No, why on earth would I delete myself so that a clone could live?

We all die anyway breh.

Wouldn’t this tech prove that there isn’t a heaven or hell tho?

What if there’s a glitch/surge during the process?

nikkas gonna have an arm on top of their head lol

Is it really a clone though if its totally indistinguishable down the last molecule? To us it may seem out there but in the future this could be the new wave just like people buy new whips because they serve a purpose or function. Or it could be a Ship of Theseus thing.
Um, yes. It is not the original so it is a clone.

I'm not putting a stop to my existence so that I could get some place faster.

But what IS the original? Really? The majority of the cells in your body that are there now weren't on the day you joined the Coli. Flash forward to 2030 and most of the ones engaged in processing this statement won't be present as they'll have been replenished.

In that sense you already are a clone. Of a clone. Of a clone.

This thought experiment simply outsources the process, probably adds in error correction and allows you to jet without the jet. In an instant.

So, teleportation is here. Actually its replication so the you that is standing here is Ctrl C, Ctrl V instantly to another location. In the process of the scan the first you, the real you, the current you is deleted. Killed in other words.

The second (or third, fourth etc..) you, the fake you, the new you is a pixel perfect copy of the one that jumped in the machine. So the you that steps out is a clone of the original. Early adopters get free lifetime use for themselves and a plus one but have to sign a waiver in case of unexpected side effects.

Would you use this tech?

No more waiting in queues, jetlag or the rest. You simply die and get instantly resurrected anywhere else on the planet. The process is painless. The edit invisible.

How do you feel about this? If no what prevents and if yes what do you think of the broader implications beyond convenience?

:picard: Pass. It doesn't sound like this new tech accounts for the spirit/consciousness? This was something that had me :patrice: in Netflix's Altered Carbon. In that universe, the humans are virtually immortal since after birth everyone has tech installed in the base of their skull called "cortical stacks". As long as the stack isn't damaged at death, a person can be reincarnated into fresh copies of their body, another person, or a whole new body (sleeving). Thing is you can have your stack copied while alive (double-sleeving which is super illegal). That tells me the tech is only copying memories and that each revival is a new person.

But once again, what is a person?

The cells that turnover and replenish like the ship paradox says? In that case whats original? Not the flesh, thats for certain. The concept?

What are you if not a story in your head, some biomarkers and sentient flesh? A series of snapshots strung together as a coherent narrative that answers to a certain name when said.

What happens to someone who loses a piece of their memory via accident? Are they no longer who they say they are? Were? There's levels to this. What about someone who flips their life and is no longer a knucklehead. A "totally different person" in that respect... What changed? What stayed the same?

Is the ship still the ship if you've changed every component?

the whole of a person is not just their biological assembly. you can't start this off with "you die". ruins the dialogue

its not even a spirituality angle, but a matter of identity altogether. you don't even get to the /why do you believe you are you/ part this way

Some rapper or singer will set up a show where he performs simultaneously across the world by jumping in and out of the teleporters to different stages in different continents, seamlesly, and it'll be a wrap.

The whole world will want in and things like jets will seem as quaint as steam powered boat as people take Instastunting to a whole nother level with this quantum leap replicating them.
