From what I was told years ago, Lucas, Spielberg and Jackson were the most high profile people from the entertainment industry involved in this. Jackson only got exposed/thrown to the wolves because he ran into money issues, being unable to pay people off and the pay outs weren't restricted to the victims to witnesses.

He used Lucas's ILM SFX department for a lot of his movies in the 80s', 90s', and 00s'. I think he only recently branched out and started using WETA and other digital services for his films.
