There is absolutely a genetic component to weight gain or loss --- the variance of individual metabolism is a key regulator. I know several people who never even look at a carb, and work out every week, and forever remain "chubby" because their margin for error is so slim due to their genetics. On the flip side, we all know thin people who eat like sht and never gain a pound (I would fall into this category.
Furthermore, there is something to be said for our modern impossible standard of beauty. Back in the day "thicker" girls like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, etc were considered beauty standards, with sizes that were far more attainable and reasonable. The 80s ushered in a bony, anorexic standard that is actually quite dangerous. A healthy body with a normal levels of body mass is considered "fat" nowadays. Thats wrong, and Im not mad there is push back against these unhealthy conventions. Remember black people had to fight like hell to get the society at large to accept big butts --- before having a healthy nice ass was considered "fat".
