I never liked the whole mafiaso thing. glorifying italian mob culture. even though some classic music came out of that era it never really sat well with me

"Ask around who's laid up, sharp and straight up. Mafioso, getting nikkas' wakes sprayed up" :ahh::ahh::ahh:

shyt the entire OB4CL album...:blessed:

I cant not love the whole mafioso shyt. True a lot of the shyt these 90s GOATs was rapping (and some of them living) was destructive imagery & lifestyle.

But the artistic expression of things they seen & their environments.. the storytelling shyt :banderas:

I agree to an extent. There wasn't the widespread use of the Internet in that day so you had to rely on local record stores, the radio, etc. A cat in Memphis or Birmingham got the big East Coast acts like Biggie but likely missed out on artists like OGC. Same as many East Coast cats likely missed out on early Triple 6 Mafia and the like.

Nowadays there's no excuse (b/c the Internet) for not hearing about underground artists and such but back then it was more reasonable.

CABLE >>> the internet.

all these acts you listed were on TV.

the internet is overrated as hell. most people arent searching out new acts from across the map. the only people doing that are junkies like us, and even still most posters on these forums and such are close-minded anyway.

people generally use the net to keep listening to the same chit that theyre already into. the most discovery they make is when they come across a similar act or someone of the same mold of the artists that they search out.

You're forgetting about the video shows/magazines. You wouldn't hear OGC on daytime radio in CA, but you'd see the video on Rap City/Yo MTV Raps. Plus you'd see them in the Source or other magazines.

Triple 6 is a different story though, before 97. They weren't on a major label. They weren't getting video play on the nationwide shows and they weren't getting write ups in the Source. Now maybe they had an ad in the Source before they went nationwide, but not a write up (to my knowledge). They were truly local in every sense of the word. Other than word of mouth/family.

triple 6 profile was boosted by the bone thug beef. they even had "b.o.n.e. diss" in one of their albums titles.

and they were buzzing on the internet, especially when bone's "art of war" dropped. thats how i discovered them before "tear da club up" hit BET.

lol. alot of those groups owe bone some money.

as for "late nite tip", i dont know if they originally released it underground, but as far as the single goes, it was their 2nd video on BET. spring '98.

It's never that simple. Especially around 97-98.

then why did no limit sell? its not like they were all over the airwaves.

and you mention '97-98 as if they were just a beneficiary. they were one of the main reasons that the sales boom occurred.

those songs were hot.

that nonchalant joint was a HIT. and they still play her other hit on BET Soul.

I'm absolutely disgusted with the hate against jeru the damaja :scusthov:

for the most part, coli taste is :gag:

:laff: at some of the shyt in here propped as a "classic"

sun rises in the east was a genuine 90's hip hop classic

ehh.

its more of a '90s boom-bap rap classic than an overall classic.

but i hear you tho. lol @ people in here not knowing jeru.

100% Fax.
Cable was far superior. All that shyt was curated and in two places. You like hip hop? Watch Yo and Rap City and you good.

Come to think of it. Didn't Bone throw shots at them on LAD? Had i been able to understand what they were saying...I would have had no idea what they were talking about :lolbron:

I'll have to take your word on that. But your word is good here :wow:

That's what I thought :ehh:

That's the million dollar question. The very general point that I was making was just that talent/good music doesn't directly translate into sales.
What did cause the sales boom? :jbhmm:
Here me out: Bone/Fugees/Pac selling a ton of records in 95-96. Then Bad Boy going super crossover mainstream in 97. Let's not forget about Will Smith either. :martin:
Truthfully, I don't know.
No Limit moreso had a super strong core cult like following. To where every record went at least gold (I'm generalizing). And they released albums at a pace hip hop had never seen before. But at most, did P ever sell more than 4 million? On one album I mean.

yea. plus the box and the local shows.

this is the stuff that put us on. as opposed to the internet, which most people just use as a vehicle to expand on what theyre already checking for.

unless youre a rap forum junkie, the internet is overrated as f*ck.

yea bizzy dissed 3-6 mafia on notorious thugs.
then came "look into my eyes" and the art of war album.
they basically boosted the profiles of all their rivals in '97.

pretty sure ghetto d sold more than 4 mil. either way, he sold it INDEPENDENT.

as for the cult comment; youre downplaying no limit. cuz acts that live off of strong core cult followings, arent doing national ARENA tours on their own, and they especially wouldnt be playing east coast sports arenas and the garden. whats funny is, alot of these acts that get propped up in hindsight were the real cult-rappers that couldnt make any of these moves.

im not saying they single-handedly started the boom. im just saying that they played a major part. they werent some random beneficiaries. the bolded with them putting artists out every 2 weeks with majority of them going gold with no airplay - is very telling breh. they kept us in the record stores, even the days when we werent neccessarily looking to buy their stuff. and im east coast. not even one of their biggest markets but you felt that impact.

That scooby doo boom shaka laka das efx lords of underground annoying flow. shyt was corny as hell but bunch of hipsters will tell you that's hip hop at it's finest :dead:

Also 90s cliche movie hip hop version themes. When the game got commercial those shytty ass movies started using corniest rap song ideas ever to their movies, shyt was embarrassing even vanilla ice could outrap some of the shyt they had in those lame ass movies :russ:

Also I don't like how a lot of fans assume that 90s were about east vs west shyt when south had a lot of brehs influencing game heavily. Like Three 6 Mafia, DJ Screw, No Limit gang with their ideas (though they were popular in 90s) but yeah ordinary fans will tell you oh east vs west.
The Fu-Schnickens

East Vs West was the stupidest thing to happen in hip hop. Being in L.A it was even funnier because pac was popping all that shyt and had fans but bad boy ruled the L.A radio for a mintue alongside death row

You know what I don't like?

I never liked the people who shyt on the 90s and try to overrate other eras. This decade is talked about 24/7 for a reason. It's the greatest era of Hip Hop deal with it!!!!!

Ol Vince Staples I like Bow Wow better than Tupac ass nikkas

This thread should have ended here..

90s is GOAT for a reason
