The support of the crime bill has to have nuance to it. People wanted less crime but really didn't want it the way it was spelled out in the crime bill. The congressional black caucus fought (and failed) to get more community development initiatives instead of straight up policing. They pretty much were told this was the best bill you were going to get and eventually accepted it. It's how politics always makes the same threats. "If you don't sign this now your neighborhoods are going to go to shyt and we won't try to help again..." Those ultimatums that plague politics. The idea was that it would lead to something better, but as per usual, it never did. This is true the people mad at the crime Bill were people born years later
Talk to any person that was an adult during that era. I was a child but my parents and many older people I know supported that bill.
