Sitting here on the train pondering death and why good people have to die before their time...
Three months ago two of my younger brother's best friends, Xavier and Eeb, were robbed while they were walking along a neighborhood that they'd frequently visited for years to skateboard. They were robbed and tried to fight back and both were shot. One of the young men succumbed to his injuries and passed early the next day, the other young man was clipped in the leg but survived. The young man who passed was only 21 years old, a fellow soldier stationed in the same vicinity as I had been early last year. No criminal record, no thug, no hood. Just a young kid who wanted to live life and skateboard. Killed over $3 dollars in his fukking wallet...
Last month my 83 year old grandmother passed suddenly while in her driveway. She had just been given a clean bill of health of from her doctor three days previous. A couple weeks beforehand I received a voicemail from her telling me how proud she was of the man I'd grown to become and how happy she was for me recieivig my latest promotion at work. She was always a constant source of joy, encouragement, and love throughout my entire life. Going back to Grand Rapids, Michigan. The place of my birth, for the first time in 13 years was an experience unlike any other I've ever had. Viewing her body and being asked to represent her six grandchildren by speaking at the funeral was one of the most emotional moments in my life. I got up on that podium and cried like a newborn child. I don't even like to think about that funeral or seeing my grandmother dead.....
This morning I awoke to a call from my mother informing me that my uncle had been in a terrible car accident and was unconscious in the hospital with a broken neck, ruptured lung, and fractured leg. My mother asked me to pray for him while I was at work today, less than an HOUR later my younger brother called me and informed me that his best friend Eeb, the other young man who survived the shooting that claimed Xavier, drowned yesterday while swimming in a lake. This was a young man who was going to work everyday, going to night school to better his life , enjoyed skateboarding and chilling with his friends. Never had a bad word to say about anybody. Suddenly dead in the span of 24 hours for going swimming....
So today I've been reflecting on the concept of death. I've no real insight on the matter at the moment. No illuminating epiphanies. No words of wisdom. Just thoughts and conflicting viewpoints....
