Yeah. It keeps the charcoal from falling on the floor.
Putting herb in a hookah is better for your health, and you get more flavor from it because you are vaporizing it not burning it. Try it out if you get the hookah to see what I mean. Just get a grinder, grind your herb up real good, then mix it with a little tobacco or other herbs. You will see what I mean.
