Is the price he is asking considering the miles too much?

Would fixing the issue be expensive at a mechanic?

I know almost nothing about working on cars would this be a good place to start?

I also don't know how to drive stick but I'm pretty confident that I can learn in a few months if that

How far is said project going? You can probably do some work to it but at 229k miles you might have to replace too much of the car over time. Then mixing in old and new can be hairy, etc.
