First off - R.I.P. To Melvin Edmonds.
This is prolly my favorite After 7 song, because it's straight laid game.

Particularly potent is the way they can acknowledge the feelings of the girl, but still hit them with how they feel different about it...

Kevon is the perfect type of singer to kick this off with that soft, humble voice:

You've got that look in your eye
And I've got plans for two...
...though your the type of girl that likes to take her time with love,
I'll gladly wait forever for you...

It's okay if she wanna wait, but he got plans...he can put those plans on hold...
then he hits her with that "but"...

But in the middle of the night, I know something ain't right.
We've got something special, girl let's give it a try

He feel like something ain't right if he ain't with her in the middle of the night.

Then they get to the chorus, and I'm speculating here - but I feel like the mentioning of
up to 3 nights may be a nod to the idea that if you go out with somebody 3 times, then by the
third time, it's time to get to Body Slammin' and Jammin'. But again, that's me speculating.
And whether it is or not, Kevon still says on the ad-lib:

"I'm gonna wait girl, if that's what it takes"

Then Melvin comes in on the second verse, and his voice is a little more gruff:

You've got that love in your heart,
And I've got love for you...
...but I'm the kind of guy who likes to get right to the point;
I wanna give my lovin' to you

If you got some game, you can read when somebody is feeling you.
And even if the holding back some, you be like "stop playing".
And that's what Melvin doing here, "I wanna get to the point"...

So in the middle of the night, when I'm holding you tight
I'll show you how precious lovers love through the night

Yeah, fucc all that "not feeling right in the middle of the night" business
like the first verse was talmbat, lemme show you how this supposed to go down...

And then when they get to the bridge they start laying it on, almost screaming.
And they repeat this a bunch, just in case you wasn't picking up on it. Lol

One night of love, YOU KNOW YOU OWE IT, BABY
...just one tender touch of lovin'...

This is a prime example of the draw of a Babyface/L.A. song - you can get away with saying all kinds of bold/forward stuff if you can make it sound "pretty" enough. Find the right voices to sing it, and put a nice, easy groove behind it and you can make something rough sound so smooth. Classic. R.I.P. Melvin.
