Might?!?!? He is a young yankee slugger. He will be EASILY the highest paid ATHLETE of all TIME as soon as he gets a new contract.
His next contract will not eclipse Trout and Harper.

Plus you must not know much about baseball's salary structure. He wouldn't get a huge deal even in that range until he has played at least 6 or 7 seasons. He's a rookie now.

Maybe you're right, but are their player caps that raise after an amount of years? If not, why would the yankees not throw the truck at him?

see the way baseball is structured....:francis:
if he was 22 years old doing this shyt...id be more inclined to agree with you...but he's 25
he's not gonna be able to get arbitration...where he could get a salary bump for 3 years...then he'll be 28....where he puts out a number he wants to get paid...the yankees put out a number they want to pay him....and a 3rd party decides whats fair....
he wont be completely unrestricted until he's 31....and he'd have to continue putting up major production to that age...and he just now took a leap...who knows if he stays the same offensively for 6 years.
also teams are now shying away at giving stupid money with years to 30 year olds cause of albert pujols and ryan howard
so yeah the yankees could back the brinks truck up for him when he's 28....likely not though

They can sign a relatively big deal in the 100+ range. While you are still in arbitration years, your total salary is restricted until you reach the 6th year of service. He can do like Trout and sign for $144 milli that covers three years left of arbitration, and then be able to get that $400 milli like he will when he hits free agency.

I'm totally grateful for everything Pujols did here, but I'm ok on him passing up on the 10 year deal with us to go to the Angels. Paying a 43 year old $30 million or whatever is just not good.

Thanks, I see what you mean @MustafaSTL

I thought arbitration was just how baseball titled their negotiations...didn't know it worked different. I thought he'd just be ballin because of no team cap.

i forgot to mention arbitration is usually the last option
agents and the team negotiate...but if the number is too far apart the player and the agent can opt for arbitration....
which can happen here...if he's putting up numbers at a ridiculous rate....for the next 2 1/2 years

He's 6'8'' 270. There's never been a player quite like him as a position player.
