When you buy a domain name and forum software you pay a 3rd party for storage on thier server, for small sites it's ~$10/month, huge sites may get close to $70/month. It's not expensive to run a forum, not even a little bit. Ad revenue is big. The donations from members could cover data storage costs alone, ad revenue is icing on the cake.
Forum websites are cheap to make and maintain.

Lol @ that for a site like the coli they need a dedicated server or 2 if you have a decent one it can run from 150 - 500.

Honestly I don't mind ads in general. You're here to make money and the site is free but AT LEAST MAKE SURE THE AD DOESNT fukk WITH THE FUNCTIONALITY!! THE AD COVERS UP THE LITTLE ARROWS THAT ALLOW YOU TO SCROLL AUTOMATICALLY TO THE TOP OR BOTTOM OF THE THREAD.
