It is about DJ since thats the scenario you referenced in your OP. The rule isn't dumb, and I'd ask you to go look up how things USED to be done if you're that upset.

Bottom line: Guys are making multimillion dollar career decisions and have 8 or so days to do so, while the league goes over their books to set the salary cap for next year. The only reason this is a big stink is because a popular owner got made fun of, and a big time agent might be on the hot seat now. This happens all the time from both sides. If you want the FA period to start with 0 moratorium you are still going to have teams and players discussing terms of a contract before the guy can officially sign.

What are the advantages of having the moratorium. Teams will be talking to free agents before allowable regardless of how the system is setup, you cant police that.

The moratorium is stupid, and haven't helped explain why its beneficial.

Im willing to bet they alter the rules by next summer which will completely validate this thread. This isnt anger being directed at DJ, its being directed at this stupid rule.

In the older era, teams would just show up asap and hand the guy a contract and ask him to sign. Other teams would have no chance to negotiate, and the player wouldn't have a chance to take time to mull over other options. The moratorium serves its purpose - allow teams and players to make decisions with enough time in between pitches and contract time. Trust, you don't want to go back to the old way because the fukkery would be 1,000 times worse.

If you want the moratorium period to be shorter, that's cool. Just don't complain when the same thing happens.

are we gonna act like teams and owners don't do this to players every year.

promise something then turn around a trade them when the opportinty for someone better comes along.
riley was getting ready to send whiteside packing when heard aldrige was interested in miami for lil bit.
i have no problem with cuban getting a taste of his medicine. shout out to tyson, no reason they shouldn't have tried to resign dude. every year they try to replace chandler with dwight or deandre or someone else. now they have nothing.

Can someone explain what actually happened here?
NBA free agency opens on July 1st, but the league bars teams/players from signing official contracts until July 9th

Thus, teams/players make handshake deals, agreeing to contract terms

Deandre agreed to terms with Dallas last week, then backed out of the deal at the last second before it was time to sign the contract and decided to stay in LA. Dallas made trades to free up capspace for him once he committed, and went out and agreed to terms with Wes Matthews to further bolster their team

Deandre never informed Dallas direct he was bailing on them, and fukkery ensued all day yesterday and now Dallas is shyt out of luck, because the free agent market has completely dried up

Point of this thread is to illustrate how stupid it is for the league to encourage these handshake deals, instead of just allowing players/teams to sign when free agency opens, thusly removing the possibility of the fukkery we saw yesterday.

Sounds like these teams keep thinking they can punking players and count on players being too weak or soft to stand up for what they want for themselves.

Teams would lose credibility if they pulled offers and would negatively affect them in free agency, and how many times has a team pulled an offer?

Deandre wont have any repercussions other than a few days of people maybe throwing some hate his way
Don't know. But it actually happened today. Nets pulled their qualifying offer from Teletovic

Its not punking when you agree to something and the team's actions are based off of that agreement. Its just punkass.
