That was an era where the graphic capabilities of a machine could allow developers to evolve gameplay. The jump from PS1 to PS2 allowed developers to do way more than the jump from PS3 to PS4.
Thats true but ps3/360 still had new generation defining games not long after launch

This is one of the first console generations where you can slightly scale back a game and have it as a cross generation title. Like the PS2 had GTA3. That game couldn't be done anywhere near the same on the PS1. same with a game like Gears of War on the 360 that game would have to be drastically scaled back on the Xbox.

In this generation with a few trimmings you can keep games in the same ballpark across the generations. Many of these games we're getting are hitting both generations together. They might be better games if they weren't though.

Mario 64 is a game that depended on the technology of the time to be possible. You had to play it in it's era to appreciate it because it's a tweener game. As technology improved Mario games could take the foundation of Mario 64 and be better games with better tech. The 2D Marios don't have that problem because they dependence on tech is far less.

Key word there. What other games borrow concepts from Mario 64 other then generic first 3D platformer? All modern FPS are influenced by Halo. All open word sandbox shooters are influenced by GTA. Can't say the same for Mario 64

Mario 64 is arguably the most influential game in history.

It was the very first game to use a free roaming camera.

On May 5, 2011, Super Mario 64 was selected as one of the 80 games that will be displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum as part of "The Art of Video Games" exhibit that opened on March 16, 2012.[69][70]

In an interview with The New York Times, Rockstar Games head writer and VP of creativity Dan Houser, when asked about influence from other games stated, "Anyone who makes 3D games who says they've not borrowed something from Mario or [The Legend of Zelda] [on the Nintendo 64] is lying."

I DARE YOU TO FIND A BEST GAMES OF ALL TIME LIST THAT DOESNT HAVE MARIO 64 IN ITS TOP 10

The funny thing is theres a game on n64 called body harvest. It was made by the people who would go on to make gta 3. Guess what? It used open world sandbox gameplay.
