Thanksgiving isn't even uniquely American, as the custom of having large feasts to celebrate gratitude is pretty common among most cultures. The origin of American Thanksgiving is more myth than fact.
America’s Thanksgiving is uniquely American .

Should I celebrate every country’s Independence Day on Nigeria’s Independence Day since many other countries have an Independence Day? Like how people try to do Juneteenth which is Black American Independence Day? & like they do Black history month?

If I’m in Mexico celebrating dia de Los muertos by trying to go trick or treating, am I celebrating dia de Los muertos? Or am I disrespecting their day of celebrating their dead by inserting my American culture trying to go trick or treating?

If I’m in another country and their holiday revolves around eating their National/traditional dish but I decide to eat a hamburger with fries, how am I celebrating that holiday? And if you say I’m not then how is it ok/respectful for me to claim I am celebrating it?

I’m Black American - although I have the privilege of travelling across the globe due to work. You’re just an insufferable twitter type and this reply further accentuates that - just loud and wrong and reaching for the most accessible buzz word/talking point without fact checking. Insufferable :hubie:
If you have been to other countries and haven’t participated in their culture/ethnic holidays, the right/authentic and respectful way, then your travels were pointless

& I have never had a Twitter account so it doesn’t make sense for you to keep trying to claim that.

I agree with this. Don't understand why this is a controversial take.

You saw a video captioned “my first Nigerian thanksgiving” of a presumably black american individual celebrating thanksgiving with seemingly Nigerian friends - in their home - and immediately jump to baseless and unintelligent outrage farming talking points such as “I think it’s disrespectful to make thanksgiving about yourself” - all because folks incorporated some of their gastronomy. Let’s begrudge them!

When told how ironic (I doubt you’d even be able to spot the irony) and insufferable the above reasoning is - you immediately went for loud and wrong assumptions - and did the same in the subsequent post I’m replying to now. Just because you’ve never had a twitter account it doesn’t mean you don’t post like the aforementioned insufferable people. You’d fit right in - as evidenced.

Be easy :hubie:

:dahell: ...you can celebrate any holiday however the hell you want. Nobody cares. You think people are gonna protest what you do on your own damn time?? These are not laws. I can't even begin to understand how feel disrespected over what people cook in their own fukking house. Do you think they're gonna break into your home and make you eat their food?

I'm beginning to think alot of people on this site are either sheltered or just plain ignorant and have not been around other cultures

Maybe it's because I'm from the Northeast, IDK. But it's very normal. I know a Greek coworker who is 1st generation who is the main cook on Thanksgiving that cooks a full course Greek meal for his family then makes maybe a couple Sweet potato and apple pies for desert every year. Same goes for my Jamaican friends, Indian people I know, Puerto Rican, etc etc. This site sometimes feels like the twilight zone lol

I think it’s disrespectful to make thanksgiving about yourself. It’s literally about the traditional American foods and the alleged meal that the natives and “settlers” shared thenturned into the foods that Black Americans created.

It’s a cultural American holiday and should be about that.

The different ethnic themed foods should be for Christmas. That’s what my family does. And then new years is eating out plus/and/or the superstition foods that’s supposed to bring good luck.

:salute:

this is so on point !!!

Let me tell you a secret....

NO ONE GIVES A fukk. I hope you don't ever go to a July 4th cookout with Latinos, Middle Eastern people, or Africans. They are BBQin Goat meat, Fowl, Lamb, with Halal food or Jollof rice as a side dish... and other "Non-American" food. You'll probably faint. No need to be sheltered and ignorant for daps lol

Yeah, almost as if that caption was made by whoever “KendraG” is :skip: most likely to reflect/included who she’s spending it with and some of the spread selection - it’s not as if the folks include are going around claiming thanksgiving as their own thing.

What a hill to die on, regardless. Like I said, you brehs slowly turning into insufferable twitter fakkits :hubie:

We all have free will

If I move to a country and choose to participate in their holidays, I’m going to actually participate in their holidays and do so respectfully.

This is no different than people trying to make Black History month about everyone instead of who it’s created for which is Black Americans

I expect you to be disrespectful and ignorant on Black American history/culture and make light of things. It’s typical for your people

You must be a foreigner.......

No american gives a fukk about how and what somebody chooses to prepare their food for thanksgiving.
