I don't really value what Rick Rubin brings to the table, he's not really hip hop and the brand of hip hop he did make isn't the type that I enjoy.
That said, there's some truth to not being able to play instruments, engineer or make beats being the end all be all in terms of being a producer, however if you don't do any of these things, you are likely overrated. Which is the case for rubin. Kanye went through the same phase for his latest albums and the music quality has been mostly mediocre outside of half of donda
