Why would a woman trade a working man who's bringing in a paycheck AND helping rear the kids for a paycheck and shouldering all of the responsibility for raising the children?

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

My own Mother said the projects she was living in while pregnant with my sister had Social Workers come in and
held workshops where they told the pregnant women how to get aid/assistance that she attended.
They told her it would be best to leave my Father for the maximum benefit.

That didn't make a whole lot of sense to her, either...she never went back after that

I grew up on section 8. When I turned 18 I got a job and was providing everything for myself. The welfare office told my mother they would raise her rent by $1000 a month because I had a job. They literally caused her to turn on me and see me as an enemy. Mind you I was making minimum wage at $7.25/hour. They really don’t want men in the house, even if it’s the mothers own son.

Your post doesn’t make any sense. If the government is offering to cover the housing and food costs then she is not shouldering all of the responsibility. In fact, she’s not even shouldering MOST of the responsibility.

Also, you’re young so you just don’t understand what took place at the time. This was the same time where propaganda was being marketed specifically to black women about being “strong and independent” This is why black women are the only women on the planet you ever heard of saying “I don’t need a man”

You don’t hear Hispanic, white, or Asian women saying they don’t need their men

Single mothers received higher welfare checks. So if a social worker came by to check in a welfare recipient and saw a live in boyfriend, that woman risked losing her benefits. There's also the idea that a husband was more likely to leave his family because at least the wife would receive welfare.
Furthermore, the government would even go as far as to raid black women's homes who were on section 8/welfare to search for anything that might signify that a man was living in the house such as a size 11 show or even a extra toothbrush

My parents were born in the 40s, and my step father was born in the 30s. There was no welfare and black families were just as broken up in the South as you see today. Family members housing cousins, neices, and nephews, due to dead beat dad was just as common. I question a lot of statistics on the subject simply because in the South before the 60s, the census records are all garbage.
This is one of the boldest lies I’ve ever seen on this platform.

Black women had a higher marriage rate than white women up until the 1950’s

In the 1950’s, only 9% of black children grew up in a single parent household.

Black people could not survive as single parents during Jim Crow. Please don’t make generalizations basdd on whatever dusty southern town your family is from

Productive black men don’t abandon their families

Agreed but The Coli’s “He-man Woman Hater” Club thinks when black mothers got on welfare they decided to be single moms and raise their children while kicking the father out.

But why would that stop a father from doing everything possible to be in the children’s life and raising them?

I've heard this and not only does it sound ridiculous to me, it is a horrible take on black women. Basically what it says is that black women exchanged the father of the family for less than $500 a month. If that's all it took there was never a family to begin with. I think it's more likely the family had already broken down and welfare was a band-aid to help the situation.
It’s not a horrible take, it’s history. As I said to another poster, white america waged war on black people after the groundbreaking progress of the civil rights movement. At the same time you had the boost in welfare payments, you had crack and high powered weapons being flooded into black communities.

It wasn’t just welfare, black women were targeted with propaganda promoting independence and single motherhood. This was the time period where the “strong independent black woman” was being promoted by popular magazines at the time.

Idk where you’re getting this $500 nonsense

“The benefits available were extremely generous. According to Peterson, it was “estimated that in 1975 a household head would have to earn $20,000 a year to have more resources than what could be obtained from Great Society programs.” In today’s dollars, that’s over $90,000 per year in earnings.

That may be a reason why, in 1964, only 7% of American children were born out of wedlock, compared to 40% today. As Jason Riley has noted, “the government paid mothers to keep fathers out of the home—and paid them well.”

That is what they decided to do and that’s what the system wanted them to do. I experienced it first hand.

You don’t understand how the system worked. A father could not be with his family. He could not be in the house and could not contribute to the household income.

Yeah, but a man gainfully employed is much much less likely to abandon his responsibilities as a father, friend.
Exactly. What welfare did was caused black women to change their process of selection in choosing a suitable father and husband.

When you depend on the man’s income for survival to support you and your family, you will only choose responsible gainfully employed men.

However, If the government is offering to replace the functions of a man ie as a provider (welfare) and protector (police) then women don’t have to be selective in choosing mate.

Also, a productive man is not going to choose a woman who is on welfare. That only leaves unsuitable unproductive men to reproduce with unproductive women.
