As much as it pains me to say it, X was a crackhead.I watched a DMX doc where he was negotiating a deal. They asked X if he'd like to go over the deal before he signs, he said nah let's just sign. His lawyer had to step in with the"nah let's read it first"
It was so depressing. Soon as he signed it they told him how much had to come out to cover his child support and lawyer fees for prior cases. X just looked defeated from beginning to end. And this was vet DMX...I can't imagine what he left on the table in his prime just not giving a fukk.

Business acumen and elite musical/rapping abilities don't always go hand-in-hand.
The industry can turn any average person with average talent into a star. That's the leverage they use. Probably more true in hip-hop since you don't need to be able to sing or play an instrument.
The music company dangles some (a lot?) of upfront cash in your face....so they can fukk you down the road. Why? Because while they are signing you to a new deal, they just signed 10 other artists to the label. You're the only one that's gonna be a big star....so they wanna subsidize the losses on the others and make the $$$ back on YOU.. the cash cow.
Most musicians/rappers aren't going to school for law, accounting, finance etc., and many barely have a high school diploma. Any slick talking exec can twist them into a pretzel. The lawyers you hire and the ones at the record company already know each other and will actively work to bleed you dry.

I saw dj yella talk about after NWA and doing that porn directing shyt , he didn’t have anything and soon after he said dre got him just a regular car to drive because he didn’t have one,, because of child support and ex women..
It’s crazy even today, these young nikkas got all the information in front of them and still getting screwed over..
Yeah living in the crib and driving around in them telsa trucks are nice, but wait till fall off and bookings not calling..
Those trucks will be repossessed and you will have to down size that crib
