If our main/only sport was soccer/futbol it might be a different story.

I'm sure there's baseball/football/basketball players who might be soccer stars but never played for whatever reason.

Also it's not like we identify young talent and nurture it in soccer academies.

A kid could be a star and his coach is tommys dad who is an insurance adjustor who doesn't really know the sport

We'll never be able to compete with the rest of the world in football, even if if NBA/NFL players were playing, the main reason is a difference in philosophy. These kids are signed by pro teams when they're between 8-11 years old in a lot of cases, they end up going to club youth academies and their profession is football before they even hit puberty. We'd still have the HS to College pipeline while the rest of the world functions on the idea that if you're good at something early on you should be trained like a pro.

Look at the video @BLAZO da GAWD posted, all those kids are signed to pro clubs and not one of them is even 12 years old. Just look at this shyt -

That's Real Madrid's youth academy.

Now imagine how much better NBA/NFL players would be if teams had youth teams and were signing players at like 10 years old and having them practice like professionals for the vast majority of their lives.

meanwhile in america kids are able to dunk at 11 years old. do you realize how fukking incredible that would be to the rest of the world?

canada has a bunch of incredibly skilled hockey kids that are ridiculous on the puck with skates. same shyt.

different countries, different sports. @Malta is right about the training thing though, there's nothing North America like that and that's why they're so good at a young age. This basically the same as how they used to train slaves way back; they'd get kids to train at one thing for their entire lives and they'd be amazing at when they were older, regardless of what it was.

It has little to do with the talent pool and more to do with the culture.

A small country like the Netherlands for instance is able to churn out talent year after year despite having a population smaller than the New York state.

Word to the famed ajax academy. Definitely agree with this sentiment though. Football is about skill. Athleticism and such definitely matter but a player has to be in an environment that cultivates his SKILLS. Skill is not a requisite for players in the US. Youth players here one, typically don't play in the streets where a lot of the flair you see from the agueros, suarezs and the like come from and two, youth teams in the US play to win so their style is far more defensive which stunts the growth of creativity. Landon Donovan is probably the most creative footballer to come from the US in the last generation and he wouldn't see the pitch for a national side like the Netherlands.

skill development

if we wanted to we could
our athletes are ahead by lightyears from the perspective of raw physical talent

but football/soccer is like fourth string here in the states
until that changes let the world have it
