your question perfectly demonstrates how major corporations and governments have sullied and warped the idea of privacy and freedom of choice. A smartphone is a mini computing device with a cellular modem, thats it. You can buy a laptop or pc without an OS and no one would be asking "if you intend to conduct shady internet business with it". this phone introduces the possibility of using code you approve on the hardware you bought. open source development makes it possible to use software without restriction like Apple and Google app stores dictate.
So tell me more about the software you would use on this device and the restrictions it lets you circumvent

For me it's more about having actual control of a device I paid for. People have been brainwashed into the idea if you have nothing to hide then you should have no problem with everything your doing being tracked. I have nothing to hide but I still don't want companies or the government knowing my every move because it's not their business.

I can give you an easy one just off the top of my head, hotspot. Most companies lock it behind software to force you to pay extra for it when its something that is built into the device itself.

wifi throttling introduced in andorid pie/9 , that made wifi analyzer less effective.
sdcard write issues like forcing apps to write to certain folders rather than what the user wants.
ios and android doesn't let their users alter the hosts file. this should be out of the box functionality just like it is on the your laptop or PC. Users without root/jailbroken access have to run psuedo vpn software to modify a non-system hosts file .

Bet. I don't pay for it but discovered the hotspot on my phone works the other day :ehh:

Oh ok. I'd never bother with any of that but if you like it I love it

Weird I've never heard of this phone or Librem. I've been saying eventually I'm going to get to a point where I can afford to not use an iPhone, Galaxy, etc and just buy old blackberrys off Ebay.

This is that except you still have the touchscreen. I'm still a skeptical these can be backdoored even with switches deactivated and I still prefer the vintage of old phones but neat idea.

I got a gang of Samsung feature phones that I used for PVAs (phone verified accounts). I used to make as high as $40/$50 a day getting my nephews to respond to emails/SMS codes for people who needed them.

Verification for social media accounts for automated posting, bots, etc.

Cats are usually pushing an affiliate or CPA program through from dozens to thousands of accounts. They try to create them faster than the social media networks can delete them.

so the accounts are tied to a mobile number?

Kinda. When you're creating an account, it asks for a number to verify that you're a real person and sends a text message containing a number to confirm it. Most of those people don't care after the account is created. On the model of Samsung that I have, I can change the number, as many times as I like, using a special keypad combination. For instance, I've created about three Google accounts off of one number. On account number four, the Goog says "That's it. No more." I enter the keypad combination for a new number. After the phone gets a new number, I used the new number to verify Google account number four, five and six. Ad infinitum.
