Lot of perfect storms. The injection of drugs into inner cities and the violence/crime/incarceration waves it created. The slow death of blue collar jobs (auto factories shutting down in urban areas, or moving out of the area/city/country). And perhaps the rise of the welfare state as well.

I think there's something else as well. The casual way in which many people have unprotected sex with no thought about "what happens if a child happens." The man bounces, the woman keeps the child and subsequently gets welfare help. This happens over and over. Or the man stays for a bit before the break up. Something is happening because babies are being born yet the marriage rate has been declining every decade.

Various things caused the destruction of the black family. Mass incarceration, crack being dumped in our communities paired with the war on drugs being a huge component. Also welfare being more readily available so no man was needed in the house.
