I was generalizing...It will be IMPOSSIBLE to name every artist and give my opinion on the music...The general sense I get from the 80's is that it was WACK...Of course there are ALWAYS exception...

I am just not a fan of the 80's sound...The 80's was a corny era...A lot of over the top gimmicks and etc...People wearing weird costumes and etc...

Even the term "the 80s sound"... which one? There's like NUMEROUS 80s sounds. Sounds were always diverse, and it would change like every 2 years.

I am a sampled based beatmaker, in general, I can listen to an 80's song and know that it was from that era...

In general, the 80s had an "electronic/robotic sound"....

The Drums and percussions used in that era are quite distinct, and also the way reverb was used...And then there are the signature synthesizers used in the 80's...

And 80's music had very fast basslines, and the basslines had distinct patterns...

Of course, the early 80's and late 70's are kind of muddled, and also the late 80's and early 90's...

But in the height of the 80's, there is definitely an 80's sound...

Also, the 80's was an "OVER THE TOP" era...Songs from the 80's are just a salad of sounds, compared to the 90's when music became minimalist again...And synthesizers were not being excessively used like in the 80's...

Now we are back in the 80's part 2...

I like that you went in depth w/ your answer but a couple things I don't follow...

Anybody that knows music can identify a song by what decade it came out in... there's not too many songs I know of that aren't defined by when it was out. I've never heard a song from 1975 and NOT thought it was from the 70s, lol. Same goes for the 90s. Only time it's hard to tell is if it's something from say, 1970, 80, 90, 2000... cause its technically from its decade but it could sound like what was in style the year prior. Most music is clearly from its decade.

I know there's stuff that represents what would be considered "THE 80s sound", but it's not really a decade where u can put a blanket over all of it and lump it all together. Loose Ends sounds nothing like Rick James who sounds nothing like Janet Jackson who sounds nothing like Anita Baker who sounds nothing like Keith Sweat who sounds nothing like Prince who sounds nothing like Zapp... and so on and so forth

and where urban artists actually played instruments

up late now on youtube listening to this.....we really are due for a "proper" 80s thread on here....i think we had one in the past but it was the white america cliche of 80s music ....

we underrate our own artists.....we especially had some new superb Black solo artists in that decade and had veterans from the previous decade knocking out classics like stevie and and chaka

whoever said this is the 80s part 2 i understand what they are saying but it isn't the sequel in a good sense....its way worse obviously....

I don't think Black folks have another chance of making their mark musically on another decade until the 2020s....that decade I can see a rebirth of the harlem renaissance the previous decade but in our own creative way....as for now its too late we got to find ourselves in time by 2019...

just like in previous decades alot of times you don't get that new "era" until the "veterans" are either dying out or losing their touch.....then again do you guys think 5 plus years is enough to move on from our jays, beyonces, kanyes, and eminems?

i need some new mainstream artists who are actually good for us :noah:

i always been saying janelle reminds me of jody(watley) somehow....but something is missing from jannelle to give her that classic vibe :patrice:

Below the Funk" is really one of my favorites. It's an afro-rhythm thing, but it's really just me telling people in my hometown, "fukk you. Kiss my ass, with all that bullshyt talking about me being a fakkit. Y'all motherfukkers wish y'all had the money I had. fukk hangin' out on the corner with all the playa haters talking all that shyt in my hometown. I'm not hangin' out on the corner trying to be pimps. I got a ranch with dogs and horses and an indoor swimming pool and a family, and y'all can kiss all of our asses at the same time." So that was one of my favorite tracks.
