Funny enuff, i think the intro of this which illmatic samples. is the quintessential "hip hop" sound. At least of that era. When i think of 80s NYC and by extension hip hop. I think of that song.

Theres no definitive answer, but if I was making a 90 minute mixtape like I used to as a teenager to educate somebody or give an overview of Hip Hop from 79 until now, TROY would probably be on there, its a perfect multi layered song. Also probably Shook Ones, G Thang, Sicko Mode, Dreams & Nightmares or any Nas song.
